What is NMN? Understanding the Role of NAD+ in Aging
As people around the world seek ways to maintain energy, health, and vitality with age, Nicotinamide Mononucleotide (NMN) has emerged as a key focus in the science of aging. NMN is a precursor to NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) — a crucial coenzyme found in all living cells, responsible for energy metabolism, DNA repair, and cell survival.
Research shows that NAD+ levels decline significantly as we age, leading to reduced cellular function and an increased risk of age-related conditions. NMN supplementation is being explored as a way to restore NAD+ levels, potentially supporting healthier aging at the cellular level.

Why NAD+ Matters for Health and Longevity
Energy Production: NAD+ plays a vital role in converting nutrients into cellular energy.
DNA Repair: It activates enzymes like sirtuins and PARP, which are involved in repairing damaged DNA.
Metabolism: Supports insulin sensitivity and metabolic function.
Cognitive Function: NAD+ influences neuronal health and brain aging.
Stress Resistance: Helps regulate inflammation and oxidative stress responses.
What Research Tells Us About NMN and Aging
Animal studies have shown promising results for NMN in restoring NAD+ levels and improving various aspects of health. Long-term supplementation in mice has been linked to suppressed age-related weight gain, enhanced energy metabolism, improved insulin sensitivity, and better muscle function. Research has also shown that NMN can influence gene expression related to aging, and in models of neurodegenerative conditions, it has helped protect neurons and improve cognitive function.
In humans, research is still in the early stages. A clinical trial in Japan tested NMN doses up to 500 mg in healthy men and found that NMN was well tolerated by the body without known negative effects. Some changes in biomarkers such as blood glucose and creatinine levels were observed, but they remained within normal ranges. Another trial focused on postmenopausal women found that NMN improved muscle insulin sensitivity, which can be an important marker of metabolic health, as enhanced insulin sensitivity helps the body better regulate blood sugar, supports energy metabolism, and reduces the risk of insulin resistance over time. Improved muscle insulin sensitivity is also linked to better nutrient absorption in muscle tissue, potentially leading to more sustained energy levels and improved physical performance.

How NMN Works in the Body
After ingestion, NMN is absorbed and converted into NAD+ within cells. This process supports energy production, DNA repair, and cellular health. As NAD+ is depleted by aging, inflammation, and environmental stress, NMN helps replenish this essential molecule, potentially restoring cellular function to a more youthful state.
